Drie jaar geleden onthulde ZEMBLA dat de luchtvaartsector kampt met een groot probleem: door olielekkage in de motor ademen passagiers en bemanning gevaarlijke gifstoffen in.
Kamerleden reageren geschrokken, maar volgens toenmalig minister Eurlings is er geen reden tot zorg. Ingrijpen door de overheid is niet nodig. Maar onder het vliegend personeel neemt de onrust juist toe. Want nog steeds keert regelmatig een vliegtuig terug omdat er een ondraaglijke stank is in de cockpit en de cabine.
Piloten zetten dan hun zuurstofmaskers op, soms raken bemanningsleden onwel. Waarom blijven ook de vliegtuigmaatschappijen volhouden dat er niets aan de hand is? Zembla onderzoekt het 'best bewaarde geheim van de luchtvaart'.
